Sarah Kaber is Humboldt Superior Court's new Commissioner

(Sarah Kaber photo : John Chiv)

Congratulations to Ms. Sarah Kaber. I had reported a while back that Commissioner Fran Greenleaf maybe retiring.

I just confirmed with Risa Waddell, judicial secretary for the Humboldt Superior Court, that Commissioner Kaber will be taking over that assignment. I also inquired about an enrobing ceremony."The Court does not have an enrobing ceremony date at this time, therefore there will not be a press release for the enrobing ceremony any time soon," said Ms. Waddell.

In addition to being a lawyer, Ms. Kaber donates her time to youth and sports. I took this photo of her in 2019 giving a presentation about Rotary Field and Humboldt Youth Soccer League at the Jefferson Community Center meeting.

Assistant Presiding Judge Kelly Neel who is assigned to family law court recused herself but Judge Neel is very good about regularly following proper procedures.

I had also mentioned previously about Family Law self help attorney Tanya Ellis being considered as one of the candidates. I have done many posts on Ellus and Kreis including the most recent one about them living together. Surprised Presiding Judge Gregory Kreis recused himself.  Kreis should have since Ellis was one of the candidates and am curious  when that recusal took place.

Humboldt Superior Court Press Release:

The Humboldt County Superior Court has selected Sarah Kaber as the next Court Commissioner.

Sarah Kaber graduated from University of Pacific, McGeorge School of Law in 2003.  After a brief time working in San Francisco, Sarah moved back to Sacramento where she worked for Hiroshima, Jacobs, Roth & Lewis LLP, representing families and children.

In 2007 Sarah and her husband/business partner moved to Humboldt County and opened their own firm, Kaber & Kaber, Attorneys at Law.  Since 2011, Sarah has represented children and parents as a member of the Humboldt County Juvenile Dependency Panel.   Court Commissioners perform various judicial functions and duties with respect to traffic, criminal, small claims, child support, family law, juvenile, probate, and other matters. They are appointed to perform judicial functions to assist the court in performing its constitutional and statutory duties for the administration of justice, with primary responsibility of presiding over a daily court calendar as assigned, including acting as a temporary judge in cases.

The selection process involved interviews conducted by a panel which included a sitting Commissioner and CEO from two different California Courts as well as a retired Judicial Officer. The final decision was conducted by vote, with Judge Neel and Judge Kreis recusing themselves from the process.   “I am honored to be selected as the next Humboldt Superior Court Commissioner.  I look forward to the challenges and continuing my service to the court and this community,” states Mrs. Kaber.
