Convicted felon arrested for attempted murder, assault and several other charges


Codi Ronald Owens was arrested by HCSO yesterday for PC 245(a)(2) assault with a firearm, PC 664/187(a) attempted murder, PC 246 shooting at an inhabited dwelling or occupied car, two counts of PC 29800 (a)(1) felon in possession of a firearm,  PC 148.9(a) providing false identification to an officer , PC25850(a), two counts of PC30305(a) felon in possession of ammunition, HS11370.1 (a) possession of a controlled substance while being armed, HS11352(a) transportation or sale of controlled substances and HS 11351 possession for sale of a controlled substance.

HCSO arrested him in 2021 for probation violation as well as drugs and firearms charges. He was also arrested in 2015 by the Fortuna Police Department on drug charges and stolen property.

On Feb. 14, 2021, at about 7:53 p.m., Humboldt County Sheriff’s deputies on patrol in the area of Alderpoint Road and Redwood Drive, in Garberville, conducted a traffic stop for a vehicle code violation.

Upon deputy contact, the driver of the vehicle provided deputies with a false name. Through further investigation, deputies were able to identify the driver as 34-year-old Codi Ronald Owens of Eureka. 

Owens was found to have a suspended driver’s license and to be on probation. Deputies searched the vehicle pursuant to the terms of Owens’ probation. During the search of the vehicle, deputies located over 24 grams of methamphetamine, over 16 grams of heroin, over 23 grams of Oxycodone pills, approximately 7 pounds of cannabis bud, a large bag of cannabis trim and over 4 grams of suspected cocaine. Deputies also located a large amount of cash, items consistent with drug sales and two firearms, one of which was loaded.  

Owens was arrested and booked into the Humboldt County Correctional Facility on charges of possession of a controlled substance while armed (HS 11370.1(a)), possession of a controlled substance (HS 11378), transport/sale of a controlled substance (HS 11379(a)), possession of a controlled substance for sales (HS 11351), transportation/sale of a controlled substance (HS 11352(a)), possession of cocaine (HS 11351.5), felon in possession of a firearm (PC 29800(A)(1)), person prohibited in possession of ammunition (PC 30305(a)), false impersonation (PC 529(A)(3)) and violation of probation (PC 1203.2(a)(4)).

Fortuna Police Department Press Release:

On December 22, 2015 at approximately 2:10 pm Officers from the Fortuna Police Department received a request for back up from Cal Fire Law Enforcement Officer that he was following a confirmed stolen vehicle that he observed in the area of Hydesville headed towards Fortuna. The vehicle was occupied by three males. The vehicle entered into the City limits of Fortuna where Fortuna Officers were standing by to assist with a traffic stop of the vehicle.

As units attempted to affect a traffic stop of the vehicle, the vehicle failed to stop and took the Officer’s on a high speed pursuit through the Campton Heights area of Fortuna. The vehicle then attempted to flee eastbound on Rohnerville Road headed back to Hydesville and was eventually stopped in the 5800 Block of Rohnerville Road.

The three occupants were taken into custody without incident. 

The driver of the vehicle, 29-year-old Codi Ronald Owens from Fortuna was arrested and transported to the Humboldt County Jail where he was booked on the following charges: PC 496(a) possession of stolen property; VC 2800.2. felony  evading and HS 11364 (a) possession of drug paraphernalia.

The other two occupants were identified as 39 year old James Christian Bauer, from Eureka and 36 year old Christen Ryan Heath, from West Valley, Utah. Both subjects were transported to the Fortuna Police Department and then released.

The vehicle was released to the registered owner.
