Deputy DA Roger Rees takes over Ray Christie case

The defense filed a motion to continue the jury trial, a declaration from Larson Law Firm's Mr. Rick Richmond and a proposed juror long form in Ray Christie's case. Mr. Richmond was in court today. His associate, Ms. Caroline Glennie-Smith was present via Zoom.

The introduction from the motion sums up the reason.

"The People’s pursuit of Mr. Christie since early 2018 has negatively impacted his health. Mr. Christie has developed cancer and a heart condition since the People’s case against him began. (See Declaration of Rick Richmond ISO Motion to Continue Trial (“Richmond Decl.”).) "

"Mr. Christie’s ongoing, worsening health conditions result in Mr. Christie being unavailable for the currently scheduled August 1, 2022 trial due to his need to receive necessary medical treatment."

The jury trial date for August 1 was vacated. Trial Confirmation is on December and jury trial is scheduled for January 17.

I just did two detailed posts including the filings two days ago. The People had already indicated that they would submit on the continuance request. There was no objection from the People

Deputy District Attorney Roger Rees has taken over the case for Deputy DA Steve Steward.

Mr. Steward has been elected as Humboldt Superior Court Judge and his term begins in January 2023.

LOCO and TS showed up at the end of the hearing when most of the information and dates were being stated on record and talked with Mr. Richmond after the hearing.

LOCO and TS missed Judge Elvine-Kreis stating that "these are clearly serious medical issues" and that there was good cause. Then later Judge Elvine-Kreis said, "Life happens as Mr. Christie found out."

Defense had requested an October 15 date but Judge Elvine-Kreis is unavailable. Mr. Richmond starts a jury trial on December 12. Due to the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, Judge Elvine-Kreis suggested a January trial date.

Mr. Rees said by January 2023, this case will be five years old.
