On 7/28/2022 @ 1219hrs, Humboldt Bay Fire responded to a Commercial Structure Fire at 310 Fifth St in downtown Eureka. 2 Engines, 1 Truck and 1 Battalion Chief responded and smoke was visible from Humboldt Bay Fire Station 1, which is one block away.
The first arriving unit reported a 10ftx12ft shed fully involved with fire actively exposing the main building with potential for extension. A commercial 2nd alarm was requested and crews immediately began to attack the fire to prevent the fire from spreading to the main building. The fire was knocked down in 5 minutes and crews remained on scene for another hour to check for fire extension into the main building and ensure the fire was completely extinguished. The fire did not extend into the main building and there were no civilian or firefighter injuries.
Damage is estimated at $30,000 and was limited to the shed, which was used for smoking meat, and exterior damage to the main building. The cause of the fire is accidental. Humboldt Bay Fire reminds everyone to call 911 immediately upon the discovery of a fire and then attempt to extinguish, only if it is safe to do so.
