Yesterday, jury selection started for alleged rapist Spotted Elk Carlos Eugene Zumwalt. Deputy District Attorney Carolyn Schaffer is the prodecutor. Deputy Public Defender Adrian Kamada is Zumwalt's attorney.
Defense filed a 995 motion which was denied because it was untimely.
Today, Judge Kaleb Cockrum and attorneys questioned individual jurors in a closed courtroom.
The alleged victims are three minor Jane Does. Charges include sexual intercourse, sexual penetration and showing/distributing pornography to a minor.
The jury trial started as originally scheduled on 7/7.
The 7/5 court minutes list the jury trial would start on 7/11. I don't know if that is a clerical error or a change last minute. On 7/5, there was an offer by People to resolve the case for 24 years in prison.
The DA subpoenaed records from Arcata High School, Mckinleyville Community Health and Redwood Coast Regional Center.
After the preliminary hearing on 4/20,Zumwalt was held to answer to all charges except Count 4. The DA filed an amended complaint.
