Fifth Humboldt attorney declares conflict in Daniel Fidler case; sixth court appointed attorney already indicates potential of conflict

Convicted felon Daniel Fidler gets fifth court appointed attorney and at the next hearing, it could be the sixth court appointment.

Trial setting for Fidler's two 2024 cases scheduled today was continued again to 10/9/25 for. Confirmation of counsel is also scheduled for that day. Mr. Patrik Griego declared conflict, Mr. Paul Gallegos was appointed. Mr. Gallegos said he will review discovery but he already indicated there maybe a conflict.

When Ms. Andrea Sullivan left, I said it was a loss to Humboldt. Not only because she is a good defense attorney but because she was able to take many cases such as Fidler. Ms. Rebecca Linkous, Mr. Gregory Kreis and Mr. Joe Judge are the three Humboldt attorneys on the Humboldt Conflict panel. Mr. Judge has been reassigning some of his cases.

No one else wants to do court appointments for the measly pay and other reasons I regularly cover about As the Humboldt Superior Court Turns. Mr. Griego and Mr. Gallegos both are doing well in private practice. It is nice of them to take on a few court appointed cases. I know there has been an effort by some judges to ask other local, private attorneys to take on court appointed cases. With all the local Humboldt court rules; they should just make another one up and schedule no court cases on a Friday afternoon or do one less mental health or drug court calendar a month and use that for interventions and resolve cases. Going to jury trial in Humboldt on petty theft cases is ridiculous.

In 12 years of covering Humboldt Superior Court, I have yet to see a repeat offender go through so many Humboldt private attorneys. No one from Mendocino or Lake or Del Norte can be appointed ? Maybe no one wants to come up here? Fidler is holding up a jail bed for over a year just with his last arrest.

Even if the pay issue did not exist; Humboldt administration needs to fix the inefficiency and chaos. The local court can be run more efficiently. Courtrooms are closed daily because there is no court reporter or a recording is being made.

I may write about issues in Humboldt Superior Court and the frustration of covering it and the workload. Do you think I am the only one who feels that way? Whether I express an opinion about Humboldt Superior Court or Humboldt based on years of daily observation, facts and court records; often I am that voice for others who won't state their views in public. Can you blame them? Look at the way I have been treated, attacked and retaliated against financially and in other ways.

10/9/25: Mr. Gallegos confirms he can represent Fidler. Readiness Conference on 2/13/26; jury trial on 2/23/26.
