Smash and grab suspect preliminary hasn't even started and there are plenty of twists and turns

19 out of 43 cases in the Humboldt Superior Court system for smash and grab suspect Nathan Ruptak were on calendar today including his latest 2023 case. His preliminary was sent to Courtroom 2 after the preliminary calendar was called in Courtroom 5. He has 4 open cases. 19 counts for the 2023 case, according to Deputy District Attorney Luke Bernthal.

Motion to amend complaint was filed by DA. That motion and  OR/bail were continued to today. No decision yet on either.

Mr. Bernthal and Ruptak's attorney, Mr. Paul Gallegos are meeting in chambers with Judge Kaleb Cockrum right now. I have no idea why Deputy Conflict Counsel Jessica Bennett is here. I assume for a witness testifying. She is also in chambers.

Ruptak isn't even in court. No other media in court for preliminary calendar call or morning.

People's witnesses are on call which include several HCSO deputies. I heard parts of a conversation between Mr. Bernthal and Mr. Gallegos so there could be a possible plea or Ruptak may waive his preliminary hearing.

As of 11:20, attorneys are still in chambers. Ruptak just got to court at 11:22. Now, Mr. Gallegos is talking with Ruptak. 11:35, Mr. Gallegos is still talking with Ruptak. Mr. Bernthal is talking to two HCSO deputies.
