100 defendants, 75 firearms, nine pounds of Meth, three pounds of Fentanyl and heroin
Earlier today I was honored to be joined by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, Florida’s First Lady, Casey DeSantis, Attorney General Ashley Moody, State Attorney Phil Archer, HIDTA Director Steve Collins and DEA ASAC Marcus Anderson as we announced the culmination of a multi-month investigation into the distribution of Heroin, Fentanyl and Methamphetamine.
This case is one of the largest and most significant drug investigations ever conducted in Brevard County as today our team removed over 100 predators from our community who chose to create and then prey upon the addictions of others for their own personal greed.
As daybreak approached Sheriff’s Agents with the Special Investigations Unit, Fugitive Unit and Game Over Task Force spread across Brevard County to arrest 100 members of a criminal organization that distributed kilogram quantities of the illicit drugs.
Arrest warrants had been issued for each of the 100 suspects who were identified throughout the course of the investigation as sources or distributors of the deadly drugs. The arrest warrants and numerous search warrants were authorized by the Honorable Circuit Court Judge James H. Earp as the investigation was culminated by the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office, Drug Enforcement Administration, the Brevard/Seminole State Attorney’s Office and United States Attorney’s Office.
Opiate addiction is not unique to Brevard County and is a nationwide epidemic. The illegal distribution of Opiates in Brevard County has led to ever increasing numbers of addiction related overdose deaths. Medical Examiner records reflect that 650 people have died from Opiate related overdose deaths in the past ten years. During the past two years 172 deaths are attributed to Opiate related overdoses. Many of the deaths are directly related to Fentanyl, a powerful opioid that is 50 to 100 times more potent than Morphine and 30 to 50 times more potent than Heroin. Fentanyl can be a threat to anyone who comes into contact with it as it can be absorbed through the skin or accidentally inhaled.
Sadly, investigations have found that Fentanyl is becoming dominant in the opioid markets because it is being used to lace a variety of other drugs such as Heroin, Methamphetamine and Cocaine due to the high degree of addictiveness, which creates a larger opioid dependent clientele base.
Sheriff’s Agents with the Special Investigations Unit conducted the investigation that focused on the organization that was involved in obtaining large quantities of the drugs from outside the county and then distributing the drugs throughout Brevard County. The investigation was aimed at disrupting the sources of dangerous opiate drugs that are critically impacting our county and nation.
Seized during the investigation to date were 75 firearms, nine pounds of Methamphetamine with a value of $81,000, Heroin, and three pounds of Fentanyl with a value of over $100,000. The amount of Fentanyl seized as of today is of particular importance, as DEA estimates there are over 500,000 lethal doses by dividing the seized Fentanyl by a typically lethal dose amount. The Drug Enforcement Administration estimates a 2 milligram dose is lethal for most people. What was seized as part of this investigation is literally enough to kill every single resident of Brevard County.
Several of the suspects arrested today were arrested previously in this investigation for drug related charges and were released after posting lowered bonds. For example, Megan Wilborn was arrested on April 4, 2019, for Trafficking Methamphetamine, Trafficking Fentanyl and Possession of a Controlled Substance without a Prescription. She was released on April 6, 2019, after her bond was lowered from No Bond to $32,000. Brandon Huff was also arrested on April 4, 2019, for trafficking Heroin and was released on April 7, 2019, after his bond was lowered from No Bond to $35,000. The investigation determined that Huff continued to traffic amounts of Heroin within hours after his release.
The defendants in this case are facing charges that range from Conspiracy and Trafficking in Heroin, Fentanyl and Methamphetamine to Racketeering Influenced and Corrupt Organization (RICO). The charges bring penalties upon conviction of three to twenty-five years in prison.
Please join me in congratulating our Special Investigations / Fugitive Apprehension / Game Over Task Force and County Jail teams who have worked around the clock on this investigation to help keep Brevard County safe!!
I would like to also thank our State Attorney Phil Archer, his incredible team of State Attorney’s, and of course our Federal partners, the United States Attorney’s Office Orlando Chief Roger Handberg, the US Drug Enforcement Administration and the Central Florida HIDTA for their amazing efforts in the conduct of this case.
Additionally, I would like to recognize our County Commissioners, Rita Pritchett, Bryan Lober, John Tobia, Curt Smith and Kristine Isnardi who stand strongly behind us as they all believe that public safety is government’s number one priority!
And lastly I want to thank Governor DeSantis, First Lady DeSantis and Attorney General Moody, who are all driving the unified effort to eradicate the opioid epidemic from our great state!! Governor DeSantis said from the very beginning of his service as Governor that the safety of our citizens and Law Enforcement Officers was his top priority and he has been unwavering in his support!!
