Convicted of assault and battery, Winkle White is back in custody

Winkle Edward White is someone I covered in 2018. He was arrested and booked into the Humboldt County jail on charges of PC 148.2 interfering with fire personnel and PC 409.5 (c) entering a closed disaster area.  Investigation for burglary charges is ongoing for 2022 arrest.

White was originally charged with sexual abuse in the 2018 case. He was not held to answer to all charges after the preliminary hearing and ultimately entered a plea for assault and battery.

"He put his fingers in my vagina. He said this would be the last time, it wasn't."

Jane Doe was on the stand this morning testifying in the jury trial for Edward Winkle White. Very soft spoken, she looked very nervous testifying in a room of mostly strangers. Some jury members looked down or not directly at her, as she spoke about her alleged sexual abuse.

"In a courtroom, you got a mic, you have people staring at you, judging you?"

Six men and six women heard closing arguments  today by Deputy District Attorney Carolyn Schaffer and Deputy Public Defender Luke Brownfield in the Edward Winkle White case.

"It was the same exact thing each time. He was not pleasuring himself?"

Deputy Public Defender Luke Brownfield's closing argument in the Edward Winkle White  jury trial  was a predictable strategy.

Attack the credibility of the victim.

"She was in the room, on the bed when defendant was molesting Jane Doe."

"There was digital penetration multiple times."

After going through the charges in the Edward Winkle White case, Deputy District Attorney Carolyn Schaffer asked the jury,
"Can you convict based on only Jane Doe's testimony?" She mentioned jury instruction 1190.
