"Because the District Attorney seeks the death penalty/LWOP against a teenager, I will be vigorously petitioning Governor Gavin Newson to not sign the extradition warrant."

18-year-old Mauricio Eduardo Johnson of Loleta, is the suspect in the homicide of three Bear River residents. Johnson is currently in Utah where he was taken into custody.  California has made a request for Governor Gavin Newsom to sign an extradition warrant for Johnson to be transferred to Humboldt County.

California criminal defense attorney, Ms. Andrea Sullivan, is representing him in Humboldt. In his local case, Johnson is charged with three counts of murder; one special allegation of personally and intentionally discharging a firearm causing great bodily injury/death and one special allegation of multiple murder.

Ms. Sullivan sent me the following statement:

"The Humboldt County District Attorney refuses to eliminate the special circumstance from Mauricio Sanchez-Johnson's criminal complaint.  At age 18, he faces either the death penalty or life without the possibility of parole if he is convicted . Because the District Attorney seeks the death penalty/LWOP against a teenager, I will be vigorously petitioning Governor Gavin Newson to not sign the extradition warrant.

Governor Newsom has stayed all executions in California and is an advocate for the elimination of capital punishment.  Even without the special circumstance, Mauricio Sanchez-Johnson still faces 150 years to life imprisonment if he is convicted.  There are current pending cases in Humboldt County that are of a similar posture as Mauricio Sanchez-Johnson's case that are not charged as capital murder.   Certainly, the possibility 150 years to life is sufficient punishment to seek the State's interests and needs without seeking to execute a teenager AND I think Governor Newsome will agree."
