When even your defense attorney thinks it is a prison case, dont take hours to enter a plea for 8 cases

Attorneys had requested help to resolve Patrick Holt's eight cases. Today, Judge Christopher Wilson met with Deputy District Attorney Steven Steward and Deputy Public Defender Luke Brownfield in chambers, then Mr. Brownfield spoke with Holt, then there was more discussion back and forth between with it taking a while for Holt to grasp the inevitable and enter a plea. This was not minutes, but over an hour.

Mr. Brownfield told Judge Wilson that it was hard for him to advise Holt because even he thinks it is a prison case.

First, Holt didn't grasp that he was in court and addressed the Judge while attorneys were walked outside the courtroom. "They were just here."

"Now, they are not," said Judge Wilson.

Then Holt was laughing while Mr. Steward read the factual basis of all his cases, at one point even Mr. Brownfield was smiling. Whether it was because of something Holt said because stealing a firearm, crashing a stolen vehicle into a tree and then fleeing the scene near the Elks Lodge endangering the public is not a laughing matter.

Six cases were dismissed. Some counts were dismissed in the remaining two cases.

Holt faces a minimum of 10 years or maximum of 14 years in prison.

The eight cases are a small portion of his lengthy record in Humboldt Superior Court.

Holt's most recent arrest was in September 2018 for crashing a stolen semi into a tree near the Elks Lodge. He jumped out of the truck with a rifle and ran off. I covered the incident as it was happening.

Sentencing is scheduled on April 3.

These are just the charges for the most recent case and court minutes.

The rest of the cases and charges are listed in previous coverage.
