Michael Avenatti charged with alleged extortion and bank fraud


Michael Avenatti was arrested andposted bond. He faces charges in one federal case for allegedly trying to extort up to $25 million from Nike by threatening to reveal negative publicity.

Avenatti was also charged in a separate federal case of embezzling a client's money "in order to pay his own expense and debts," and of "defrauding a bank in Mississippi."

His alleged co-conspirator in the federal extortion case is Jussie Smollet's attorney Mark Geragos. There have been no criminal charges filed against Geragos.
