"For some boys sexually abused by another male," peer ridicule, homophobia, fear of being labeled gay hinders disclosure of sexual abuse
Dr. Anthony Urquiza from UC Davis was the People's second witness today. He testified about Child Abuse Accomodation Syndrome and barriers to disclosure. He is a psychologist, a professor at the Department of Pediatrics and the Director of the CAARE Center a child abuse treatment program.
There are 5 parts to the Child Abuse Accimodation Syndrome: Secrecy, Helplessness, Entrapment, Accomodation, Delayed and unconvincing disclosure, Retraction and Reconsideration.
"A lot of the time it is hard for a parent to hear their child is being abused," said Dr. Urquiza. This makes the parent think the allegations are not credible.
"For some boys sexually abused by another male," peer ridicule, homophobia, fear of being labeled gay hinders disclosure of sexual abuse.
"You have not been asked to interview the alleged victims in this case," Deputy Conflict Counsel David Lee asked Dr. Urquiza. The answer was no.
"You are not attempting to opine on guilt or innocence in this case," said Mr. Lee. Again, the answer was no.
