15 year plea deal is more than what Cory Nelson deserves

Pre trial for Cory Nelson's mayhem case was scheduled for October 13. Three other cases are on calendar. This morning Nelson is supposed to resolve 4 cases for a 15 year prison sentence. Nelson was in a wheelchair today.

The plea practically took all day and the end result was 14 years.

Morning update:

Deputy District Attorney Trent Timm is the prosecutor. Mr. Russ Clanton is Nelson's attorney.

Apparently Nelson's wife will be in court this afternoon. There is a protective order but attorneys talked about it.

In the case with the mayhem case, the victim is not going to get back his testicle. If you haven't read the previous detailed posts, you can search them on the blog.

As usual, Courtroom 2 was packed with people and several cases on the calendar. Nelson is filling the plea form now. However, several cases did not conclude by noon so they are on the 1:30 calendar.

Afternoon update:

Nelson's wife, the victim in his kidnap case, was in court. She wiped away tears when Nelson entered court. He, on the other hand, was guffawing and talking to Mr. Clanton before the case was called.

Maria Lynn Peltier, now Maria Lynn Nelson (they got married at some point) asked Judge Kaleb Cockrum to remove the protective order so she could go visit Nelson before he goes to prison. Judge Cockrum modified the protective order to agood conduct order.

14 year total prison sentence in the mayhem case. 8 year term to run concurrent in the kidnap case. Rest of the charges in those two cases as well as two other cases dismissed with a Harvey reservation.

Sentencing scheduled for October 27 at Mr. Timms' request to give the victim in the mayhem case the choice whether he wants to speak at sentencing or provide a statement. The victim knew there was a plea deal; he didn't know sentencing would be today. The plea details were being worked out today, in real time.

Despite being afraid, the victim testified at the preliminary hearing and was ready to testify at trial; if necessary.
