Local attorney Michael Acosta sent a Letter to the Editor to me and Lost Coast Outpost about LOCO's October 15 article regarding his and Sarah Carroll's case. I had already asked Acosta for a comment on what happened at trial assignment before he sent this letter.
Acosta also sent the email to District Attorney Maggie Fleming, Deputy District Attorney Jane Mackie and First District Supervisor Rex Bohn. He has also attached two motions.
I am the only one who has covered and done any follow up to the other people arrested with Acosta and Carroll investigation. I am not going to link all those cases. The search feature on the blog can be used to access those posts.
I have my own observations and knowledge of the many small town connections and how that impacts news, courts and everything in Humboldt. I have addressed this multiple times. I have my own observations of the other defendants' cases and how justice works in Humboldt Superior Court.
On a regular basis, I get inquiries about people wanting to hire attorneys. They don't want local attorneys. There are several reasons why. And if they do want a local attorney, who do you think they trust for a recommendation?
Rex's cozy friendship with the McBeths, Matt Tomlin being a favorite of Rex's and Sheriff Honsal are common knowledge in this town. It is relevant in the Acosta case and the entire drug bust.
The DA's handling of the other defendants in these cases are public record anyone can check.
LOCO and other media will never cover some of the issues raised by Acosta. LOCO and other media don't have a clue about what goes on in this community and who protects who. And even if they do; they have done nothing.
After this post, maybe ass kissing Brian Papstein can have all the people Acosta criticized on KINS for their spin. Quite a few of the Ingomar, conservative, fake Christian crowd thinks you are a joke Brian; they just don't say it to your face. Another untalented local inheriting a business from daddy that does absolutely nothing for the community.
The Humboldt plague. Gossipy, two faced cowards letting a few speak the truth and take risks. Humboldt will never change as long as anonymous snarks and backstabbing is the norm. Apathetic people who whine privately; sit and pretend they are successful to be accepted in the Humboldt "in crowd."
The abandoned storefronts, drugs, homelessness, those struggling is all on those of you tolerating and enabling corruption, nepotism and greed. It is the lack of vision and ability to create prosperity by weak leaders that benefits everyone. An economy based on drugs, government subsidies and government money that discourages private enterprise.
How many of you Humboldt "connected" owe money to vendors and have unpaid bills while you parade around town hobnobbing and looking down on others who don't have your Humboldt "connection" privilege?
People who have no qualms about unjustly attacking and destroying other people's reputations and livelihoods can't handle a taste of their own medicine.
Karen Paz Dominguez and others literally spoon feed other local media and yet these media do not pursue many news tips. I know a lot about the "East Indian gentleman friends" Rex wanted paid
Paz Dominguez bringing them up should have led to investigation of her claims. If the Humboldt Auditor Controller cared about transparency, she would talk to the only local media source that has guts.
People complain about drugs to HCSO, POP all the time. Only certain people get busted. If drugs were such a concern, the BOS would actively be working to make Humboldt less of a drug based economy. That certainly wouldn't work for all those in Humboldt who profit from this drug based economy and the misery it creates.
I don't know if LOCO will publish Acosta's letter or not. LOCO continues to have a local criminal defense attorney's wife cover court. LOCO can't even be bothered to acknowledge that fact but add disclaimer at other times when it is convenient and not as critical.
If LOCO had just been upfront about who they hired to cover courts, I wouldn't need to point it out over and over again. I don't have a problem with Rhonda as a person. I have an issue with how LOCO uses her and cannot be upfront about her and her husband's friendships with local attorneys. He practices in the local courts. Like other conflict of interests, locals ignore what suits them.
There have been errors, including recently, in LOCO's court coverage and dates. There are attorneys who dont trust LOCO's court coverage but they state that privately for obvious reasons. There are people who only talk to me because they trust me.
The Acosta and Carroll case is just one example of Humboldt selective enforcement and targeting of individuals, especially those who dare to speak up against this corrupt, petty, retaliatory town and court system.
It does not matter if the law is on your side. The local courts do what they want. Most Judges make up their mind and go through the motions of listening to both sides.
In both Ray Christie's and Michael Acosta's case, the DA's office has made ignorant remarks about a defendant's right to chose their counsel.
Deputy DA Jane Mackie needs to focus on providing discovery to defense which has caused delays in the Acosta/Carroll case and the Kevin Haberman related case rather than complain about a defendant's right guaranteed by law.
Most of the time other Deputy DAs are appearing for Mackie on cases, including a few times on the Acosta/Carroll case. She cannot even argue properly or do her research on bail in high risk cases and these errors have to be fixed later by other Deputy DAs.
I am not impressed by Mackie or the two recent new hires who practically have no real court experience. The exodus of experienced law enforcement and Deputy DAs over the last few years has had an impact on public safety.
Instead of PR appearances on TV news and other media, DA Fleming and Sheriff Honsal need to acknowledge why there is an exodus and take responsibility.
All the political alliances and friendships and people scratching each other's backs continue to screw the public, cause decent law enforcement to move or retire while those in charge collect their taxpayer funded salaries.
Court cases and resolutions can be political. The plea deal in the Bear River triple homicide would benefit Bear River not getting any more negative publicity. I was critical of former DA Paul Gallegos when warranted. Maggie doesn't get a pass or different standards.
People are waiting four plus years for homicide cases but out of custody defendants Christie, Acosta and Carroll are the ones the DA's office is objecting about when they go to trial? Objecting when there is good cause.
Are people really that stupid to believe that there are no other ranchers or people in Humboldt violating F & G codes? Drugs are rampant in this community. Do Rex and the Humboldt County Drug Task Force put in as much effort and respond to complaints that Billy's buddy Rex does not get personally involved with? That is a rhetorical question.
Acosta's entire letter is published below. In screenshots, for now.
As of 7:16 a.m. on October 19, 48 hours later, LOCO has not published the letter and that does not surprise me.
