The text message above was sent to me by former Fifth District Supervisor Ryan Sundberg at 2:06 p.m.
This is my response to him.
Hi Ryan. I am emailing you instead of texting you back because my response is lengthy. Sending it to a couple of email addresses, if they are still valid.
I was very surprised to hear from you because it has been months since we last communicated. Thank you for asking. I am well; as well as I can be in Humboldt, doing independent reporting and covering news that other media ignores. Doing it despite it not being financially or personally beneficial to me in any way. Doing it despite the interference and intimidation to silence me.You know all this; we talked about it but it has been months since we have been in touch. I am not spending most of my time on Humboldt news anymore.
I am well aware of your relationship with Cass Bell. I am surprised it took so long for me to hear from you.
I knew when I chose to report valid news about Cass Bell that I would receive pushback from Humboldt. And I have had that reaction but I have received a lot more support for having the courage to report news that only Cass his friends and all those who profit from him dont want out there.
Before you contacted me Ryan, you should have read my blog. You may want to read it later today. I gave Cass an opportunity to make a statement. He chose not to respond. His immature response contradicts what you and his friends say about him.
His friends and random idiots stalked, harassed and wasted a lot of my time which cost me money and time doing other news and work. And now once again, I am taking time out of a very busy day to waste it on Cass. I am sure this response will not sit well with you or him. I dont care.
I have no desire to meet Cass, especially after my last interaction with him. I doubt that you read my blog regularly anymore so Cass or someone on his behalf must have reached out to you or the popular post got your attention. Frankly, I dont care.
It is not my job to help Cass get a job or the coaching job at Arcata. Cass has done extremely well for himself.
Cass could have apologized. He could have sent me a statement, even after that online interaction. I would have published it and reacted differently to your text. Instead I get this carefully worded text, Ryan which is insulting.
You chose to text a reporter about an ongoing story with national news interest. I have already been in communication with at least one national media news source who has expressed interest. Until your text today, the Cass Bell story was old news. The only reason it keeps resurfacing is the attempts by Cass and those on his behalf using the Humboldt tactic to intimidate or spin this story to Cass' benefit.
This is not about the one person who contacted me but others who also have concerns about Cass. If there was nothing to it, Cass would get the job on his own merit. I have said this before but I dont appreciate anyone sending me texts, calling or interfering with my reporting valid news. And if you do, it will be made public. For my protection and because the public should be updated about any development to news previously published.
If Cass is a good man, if you still are the man I knew, then time and what happens after this email will reveal the truth.
FYI for you or anyone else who only contacts me when it is convenient and who thinks that they can because we had some association years ago. Don't.
