Deputy DAs Shelly Small and David Moutrie got the last laugh yesterday

The very first case I covered on Markis Shirley, he was accused of rape. He was held to answer on forcible rape after the preliminary hearing. Shirley laughed as the victim testified he brutally raped her. In that case, he ended up pleading to the lesser charge of burglary and criminal threats and was sentenced to prison.

Frequently arrested convicted felon  Shirley had at least three open cases the last time I checked on his case.

His attempt to negotiate with ridiculous offers backfired on him. Mr. Zach Curtis represents Shirley.

Yesterday, he had a preliminary hearing and I checked on one of his cases. Arraignment for that case is scheduled on 7/21. Deputy District Attorney Shelly Small and David Moutrie got the last laugh yesterday.

I have no idea how this will affect his jury trial for another case. It is no longer scheduled for July 12.

He previously turned down offers. At  a recent court hearing, his offer of two years to be doubled with admitting to a two year prior was rejected. Deputy District Attorney Shelly Small told Judge Joyce Hinrichs that Shirley is facing "25 to life"; the People made a generous offer which Shirley rejected. They told him any resolution would have to include a double digit sentence.

To the woman who screamed at me at the courthouse while I was covering the first case. From her age, she could be his mother or aunt. Still defending and proud of this loser? Go back and read my posts on Tamar Shirley running for Eureka City Council and draw your own conclusions why he dropped out.
