HCSO's "No Shave November" raises $2,680 for three local organizations

Friday, Nov. 27, 2019, brought an end to ‘No Shave November’ at the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office.

Throughout the month of November, deputies and staff were given the opportunity to opt out of dress code, growing out their facial hair and/or coloring their hair and nails blue, for a donation of $30 to Humboldt CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates), Wild Souls Ranch or Making Headway.

On Wednesday, the Sheriff’s Office presented the donations to representatives from the charities. In total, Sheriff’s Office staff raised $2,680, which was split between the three organizations.

“We’re very grateful,” said Amy Scolari, Development Director and Community Outreach Coordinator for Wild Souls Ranch. “This donation goes to our scholarship program, so that we can allow kids to participate in our program at no cost to them.”

All three programs selected this year for donations provide support and programming for local youth. Wild Souls Ranch takes an alternative approach to supporting at-risk youth by providing equine-assisted growth and learning for children in foster care or have been adopted and children who have experienced trauma or neglect. CASA trains community volunteers to serve children in the foster system and Making Headway provides assistance to individuals who have suffered a brain injury, helping them adapt and lead independent lives.

“It feels great to be able to give back to our community and help our local youth,” Correctional Lieutenant Dennis Griffin, a No Shave November participant, said. “It’s a great morale booster for our staff, allowing them to ‘let their hair down’ and do something fun while supporting a good cause.”

‘No Shave November’ is just one of several programs the Sheriff’s Office participates in throughout the year to support our community. We would like to thank all of our community members who participated alongside our agency in supporting local programming for at-risk youth.
