Peter Lusa initially arrested for Samoa bridge collision, released later for medical evaluation
On 03-05-2019, at approximately 545 PM, the CHP Humboldt Communications Center received a call of a multiple vehicle traffic collision, on the west span of the Samoa Bridges, east of New Navy Base Rd.
Upon CHP arrival it was determined that a Chevrolet pickup, driven by 32 year old Peter Vadakin of Eureka, was traveling eastbound on SR-255 when a Toyota Tacoma, being driven westbound by 49 year old Peter Lusa of Eureka, swerved into the lane ahead of him. Mr. Vadakin was able to avoid a direct collision with the Tacoma, but did collide with a camper shell that fell from the Tacoma.
A Volkswagen Beetle, being driven by 26 year old Delores Preitas of Eureka, was traveling eastbound directly behind the Chevrolet pickup and collided head-on with the Tacoma. Emergency medical personnel responded to the scene and provided care to the involved, injured parties.
Ms. Preitas received major injuries as a result of this collision and was transported to St. Joseph Hospital.
Peter Lusa and his passenger, 12 year old Jaxon Lusa, received minor injuries as a result of this collision. Peter Lusa was placed under arrest for suspicion of impaired driving and transported to St. Joseph Hospital for treatment of his injuries. While at the hospital, it was determined that Mr. Lusa may have suffered from a medical condition prior to the collision. Mr. Lusa was released from custody so he could receive a medical evaluation.
Alcohol and/or drugs are not considered a factor in this collision.
The California Highway Patrol Humboldt Area is continuing its investigation into this collision and is asking anyone with additional information to contact the Humboldt Area CHP Office at 707-822-5981 or to send an email to humboldt_area.humboldt_area@chp.ca.gov.
