There was a certification of competency hearing for cowboy hat wearing suspect James Pawlyk this morning. His arraignment for two cases needed to be completed today since he had repeatedly refused to come to court. When he did come to court, he claimed to be a Judge, a FBI agent and said he did not want a "public pretender."
"I'd like to apologize to the Court for my behavior earlier," said Pawlyk and then went off saying "it was very stressful" and he was being singled out by a guard.
Fortunately, Judge Christopher Wilson and Deputy Public Defender Ben McLaughlin were able to calm him down and stop him from saying anything about the case and making a scene.
When Mr. McLaughlin was trying to complete his arraignment and enter not guilty pleas, Pawlyk said he wanted to plead no contest to a couple of charges today. Judge Wilson told him to talk to his attorney first and not make any decisions today.
Intervention is February 15. Preliminary hearing is February 26. Deputy District Attorney Josh Rosenfeld was in court for the People.
