Alleged molestor Mark Dare works for a local tv station & other shocks during his preliminary hearing

Mark Dare is charged in Count 1 and 2 with oral copulation/penetration of a child under 10. Count 3 and 4 Recurring sexual conduct with a child under 14. Special allegation for Count 4 is substansial sexual conduct with a child under the age of 14.

Two Jane Does are alleged victims.

Court testimony revealed that Mark Dare was Jane Doe #1 and Jane Doe #2' stepfather.
Both said they were in elementary school when the alleged abuse started. The alleged abuse occured in the girl's bedroom, both with Jane Doe #1 and 2.  Jane Doe #  1 described an alleged act in Mark and Windy Dare's bedroom and another alleged act in Mark and Windy Dare's bathroom.

Jane Doe #2 said her mother did not believe them. Jane Doe #2 made a statement that her mother said that if it came down between her kids and her husband, Mark Dare, she would chose him. Windy Dare's testimony today definitely favored Mark Dare.

At one point after Windy Dare made a statement, Mark Dare nodded his head at her, indicating he was pleased,  almost like saying "good job."

During court testimony, it was first brought up by defense counsel, then corroborated by Jane Doe #2  that Windy Dare told her that she (Windy) had been molested by her own brother. Mark and Windy Dare both work for at a local tv station. They both work for KAEF- North Coast News, formerly owned by Bonten Media, before that by Eureka Television Group. This fact is also on their Linkedin profile that anyone can access via the internet.

Dare's preliminary hearing started this morning, went all day with Jane Doe #1 and Jane Doe #2 testifying. There was lengthy, very aggressive cross examination of both witnesses by Dare's attorney with Dare whispering in his ear and scribbling notes.

Mark Dare stared at both the girls even though they did not look at him. Jane Doe #1 turned her body away from him. Both girls broke down on the stand but Jane Doe # 1 cried pretty much throughout her testimony, gasping for breath whenever she had to answer about the alleged molestation. Jane Doe #1 took two breaks.

Defense presented one witness, Windy Dare, Mark Dare's wife. Her direct testimony will continue tomorrow morning and the preliminary should conclude tomorrow morning.

While I have covered homicide cases, where one side is disruptive or spoke and commented during testimony, I have never seen adults intimidate alleged sexual abuse victims, and make inappropriate comments. It was so bad that court staff and security told the Judge and he admonished the audience, after lunch and said the scoffing was inappropriate. This included either family members/supporters of Mark Dare.

These rude comments were during portions when Jane Doe #1 was crying on the stand, testifying about the alleged abuse.

The drama continued in the hallway during where a few people huddled together in prayer for "Mark".

Dare's bail is 2.4  million. On February 7, Dare had a bail reduction and intervention hearing. Preliminary hearing for February 13 was confirmed.

Deputy District Attorney Carolyn Schaffer is prosecuting the case. Deputy Conflict Counsel Marek Reavis. is representing Dare.

No other media has covered this case except for the initial press release.

  1. Wow! They sound like a perfect pair! Too bad they can’t go after the “mother” as well. She’s not innocent in this situation. He must have a big paycheck to take care of her, or perhaps she’s just a loser like her husband. I guess she would have to be to admit that she was involved in a molestation as well. I feel very sorry for the kids in this situation. They weren’t believed although I doubt the “mother” was going to give up her life style for her own flesh and blood. I hope for safety and healing for all the children touched by this darkness in the place they should have felt the safest!!!

    1. Paul, based on what? Your opinion? A friendship or any other connection with Mark and Windy Dare. In court, evidence is provided and judged by standards of law.

  4. So Paul... will you be called to the stand to give some sort of evidence in this case? I’d like to know why you’re so adamant that these girls are lying? Did the Dares tell you? Is it because you would have known if it was going on? Are the Dares just too awesome to be involved in such horrific acts? Is the testimony of the girls too tough to take in black and white. I suggest you think about what the motivation could possibly be for these girls to put themselves on public display like this. You can’t possibly believe that the Prosecutors would bring forth this case without tangible evidence. That’s not how the judicial system works. It’s not just what these girls are claiming, there has to be actual evidence. This case, like all other cases must have evidence to proceed. What evidence will you be called upon to provide in sworn testimony. Hush for now Paul. John will be sure to share your testimony, if you get called to the stand.
