Dr. Chamberlain appointed to evaluate Richard Dean; preliminary hearing for Nov 8 vacated

Intervention and appointment of doctors to evaluate  Richard Dean, the Hoopa man charged with the murder of a 52 year old man from Arcata, was scheduled this afternoon.

Dean entered an additional plea of not guilty by insanity at the last court hearing.

At the time of his arrest in 2015, he was 18 years old.

Preliminary  scheduled for November 8 was vacated. Judge Christopher Wilson appointed Dr. Chamberlain today. A second doctor and setting of a new preliminary hearing is scheduled for November 28.

Deputy District Attorney Stacey Eads is prosecuting the case. Deputy Public Defender Kelly Neel is representing Dean.

Dean usually just sat in court, silent and gloomy. Today, he showed a little bit of emotion and gratitude, giving Ms. Neel a brief smile as she explained to him what was going on in today's procedure.
