"I went to the house that burned down located on 12 and  N street in Fortuna . I interviewed a young man named Tyler Hughes who lived in the house."

"Tyler awoke to the early morning blaze with smoke so heavy and thick that he could not see anything around him. He stumbled around, trying to find an exit and was finally able to get out with his little Rat Terrier dog. Tyler went door-to-door to wake up and warn the other tenants. All eight tenants were able to escape."

Four cats, a hedgehog and an 8 month old black Labrador retriever puppy named Jake did not survive.

The fire appears to have started from a blown fuse or wiring, according to Hughes. However, the cause is still under investigation. The home is an original old growth redwood home.

  1. First thought that comes to mind-where's the "State required" smoke alarms? I'll bet they never were there because of Tyler's statement. The dam things would have awoken everyone upstairs way before his quote of 0 visibility conditions. Time to investigate the landlord/owner and his mandatory compliance. Does the City have to inspect every year, or is that the Fire Marshall's responsibility? Hey, there isn't a Fire Marshall so the Fortuna Fire would have been the responsible agency? Was this building to CODE? Was the electrical use by all 7 tenants drawing more amps than the old style electrical box could handle??? Therefore, fire could easily been caused by substandard electrical lines and no grounds in boxes????
Oh well, a nice lodging home burns down for a total loss. No one died, but darn this is a shame
