Sheriff Honsal confirms investigation of narcotics allegedly sent to inmate by a volunteer firefighter

"You will not get a statement on this until the investigation is done. , " is what I got from Sheriff William Honsal.

Sheriff Honsal did not deny the incident and told me he is going to launch an investigation into who my sources are and we had a somewhat awkward back and forth conversation about when and if this would have been released to the public.

Sheriff Honsal feels any information leaked to the press jeopardizes an ongoing investigation. I feel  the public has a right to know. Drugs being attempted into the jail is an issue.

We get press releases when it is an inmate. In this case, if it is proven that this was sent by someone associated with Fortuna Fire Department, it is a big deal.

I told him not to assume who my source(s) are.

This incident happened sometime last week.

I asked him if the incident would have ever been brought to the public's attention if I had not reported it? If the alleged suspect had been anyone else then a volunteer firefighter, would I have received so much pushback in getting official confirmation.

Sheriff Honsal said, "And yes we would investigate no matter whose name is on the package."

  1. John, Keep us all informed on this one. If a Fortuna volunteer fireman DID provide drugs to an inmate and got caught, I want his name and have him fired from the fire department. This is a disgrace beyond infinity.

    1. I will. It is an allegation and I made that clear in both posts. The bigger issue is jail staff having to deal with attempts by anyone to drugs being smuggled into jail. Let's see what the investigation uncovers.

  2. If Honsal did in fact threaten to go after your "sources," he's not merely investigating a leak -- he's sending a message of chilling speech & public policy practices (journalism) under the color of law by sending you that message.

This action, combined with the stunt Greg Sparks pulled on Floyd Squires in his press release, shows how out of control and impulsive our local decision makers have become when it comes to the law.

    2. That is one of the reasons I saved my text messages with him. I was very surprised by his reaction. And, I made it clear in my response to him and to anyone else who tries to intimidate me into silence for reporting on a report that was taken, (a report that exists) that this is not something I will tolerate. Fortuna Fire and their trolls and for this post, family and friends of the alleged suspect have been quite active today. This town does not get what reporting is or news. They have been used to getting their way. If I wanted, I could have mentioned where Crystal (and her sister work) but that is irrelevant to this post.

Instead of waiting for the investigation, people are jumping to all sorts of conclusions. They dont have a problem with reporting on alleged and names unless it involves them.

  3. Also, let the investigation proceed. If it isnt her, this will clear her name but that fact is lost in emotion and reaction.
