Ariel Sosa still on loose, bail bondsman's motion granted without objection




There was a motion heard yesterday to extend time on bail forfeiture according to PC 1305.4 for Ariel Sosa filed by bail bondsman. Non opposition by County Counsel. The motion was granted by Judge Kaleb Cockrum since there was no objection.

Sosa's bail was posted by Aladdin Bail Bonds and Two Jinn.

Franklin Molina has a severe case of scabies


Preliminary hearing for Franklin Molina is scheduled for 4/23. He has a severe case of scabies. We are on a 15 minute break.

Update: Preliminary was rescheduled to June 18. Intervention on June 11.
On record, defense just said medical condition.

Alleged victims, HCSO Detective Jennifer Turner and MCSO deputies were in court. Both sides were prepared to proceed to trial.

Count 1 is PC 209 (b) (1) Kidnapping with intent to commit robbery.  Count 2 is the same but a different victim. Count 3 is PC 211 first degree residential robbery. Count 4 is PC236 False imprisonment. Count 5 False imprisonment but different victim. Count 6 is PC 245 (a) (1) Assault with force likely to produce great bodily injury. Count 7 PC 207 (a) Kidnapping.  Count 8 is PC 215 (a) Carjacking.

Timothy Ziegler arrested again for violating a restraining order

 Last time he was arrested at the courthouse for violating a restraining order.

Ukiah Cardiologist pleads guilty to unlawfully and maliciously killing one of his neighbor's dogs and maiming another dog


With potential jurors gathering in the basement of the Ukiah courthouse in response to jury summons, upstairs on the top floor of the building a trial defendant waived his right to the jury trial that was to begin Monday morning and withdrew his not guilty pleas and denials. In their stead, the defendant entered guilty pleas and an admission of wrongdoing.

Jane Doe # 1's CAST interview was played for the jurors today at the Chad Smith jury trial. Forensic interviewer Kimberly Schneider who conducted the CAST interview was on the stand.

On April 21, 2019, at about 12:30 p.m., Humboldt County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to a residence on Three Creeks Road in Willow Creek for the report of a burglary that had just occurred.

Discarded cigarette sets mattresses on fire at Serenity Inn




On April 19th, 2019 Humboldt Bay Fire responded to report of a mattress fire against the exterior of Serenity Inn at 2019 Broadway St.  It appears that a discarded cigarette lit a pile of 6 mattresses stacked in the breezeway.

Chad Smith's brother was dating Jane Doe #2's mother and told Chad Smith "he was fucking his daughter " (Jane Doe #1)




At the preliminary hearing, Jane Doe #1 came across as the better witness. For the jury trial, Jane Doe #2  is the better witness.

Both Jane Doe #2 and her mother Patricia McBride- Costanzo were credible witnesses, with a couple of exceptions.

Woman arrested twice in one day is charged with first degree burglary


Jacquelyn Bradley will be arraigned on 5/7 with burglary. She has retained Ms. Andrea Sullivan as her attorney.

She was arrested on a bench warrant for failure to appear. After being released from jail, she broke into a home. The first degree burglary charge is for the second arrest.

Court connectivity down, staff and management working to keep things moving the best they can


Web connectivity is affected. Court calendars not displaying, court records system affected, court staff needs connectivity to enter information, staff is working from paper calendars. Tech and court management  working on the issue.

Board of Supervisors and County offices have internet. 10 a.m. update: system is up now.

"How can you think your daughter and I are fucking?"



Amy Smith, Chad Smith's former wife was the second People's witness. She was very credible today. Her direct testimony was consistent with what she testified at the preliminary hearing. Cross examination will continue tomorrow.

Chad Smith's stepdaughter sent him a bikini pic, told him "I'm so horny" and about "pleasing herself in the bathtub"


Jane Doe #1's took the stand today and cross examination resumed. She was on the stand most of the day. There was redirect and recross. Both Ms. Andrea Sullivan and Deputy District Attorney Stacey Eads read excerpts from emails.  These emails were all after the restraining order. Ms. Sullivan showed an email from Chad Smith to Jane Doe #1 to the jury.
