After opening statements in his jury trial and the mid morning break, Dean Brown pleaded guilty to six counts and molesting three young girls.
Deputy District Attorney Whitney Timm opening statement:
"I was scared so I ran for my mom."
"I want to become a police officer so I can arrest him."
"I really didn't think it would happen again."
"These are the words from the three young girls who became Mr. Brown's prey."
Jane Doe #1 and her mother "D" lived at the Betty Chinn shelter. They met Brown and his son, John Doe as well as Jane Doe and her mother at the Betty Chinn Shelter.
Jane Doe #1 and mother moved into transitional housing at Arcata House. Brown and his son also moved there.
Brown would give Jane Doe #1 candy. She was 8 years old and in the third grade when she woke up one day to find Brown touching her vagina. She ran and told her mom. Jane Doe's mom did nothing and did not believe her. JaneDoe #1 ran to her bedroom and climbed into the top bunk. Brown followed her into the bedroom. Jane Doe #1 took this to mean that she should not tell anyone about what he did to her. Jane Doe. #1 told her teacher the next day. She went home to find Brown still at home with her mom. Jane Doe #1 then went to her next door neighbor and told her what Brown did. "B. G. became irate." She took a knife went to confront Brown and told him she was going to tell Jane Doe's mother.
Someone called Arcata Police Department and told them "a lady was running around with a knife." "Det. Victoria Johnson did a minimal interview and arranged for a CAST interview."
Through her investigation, Detective Johnson found that another 8 year old girl had made a report about Brown two years ago.
Jane Doe #3 's mother "N. B." contacted Jane Doe's mother about Brown.
"Betty Chinn will tell you that Mr. Brown was very friendly with N. B." Brown was "removed from the shelter."
All three Jane Does came from different communities,"yet everything that happened to them was because of Mr. Brown"
Deputy Conflict Counsel R. J. Leohner opening statement:
Brown and his attorney, Deputy Conflict Counsel R.Leohner had already wasted enough time and resources and this morning was no different.
First court started late because attorneys had to talk to Judge Kaleb Cockrum. I am pretty sure it was Mr. Leohner's fault because all the delays this morning were initiated by him.
After the jury came in and was seated, they had to leave because Mr. Leohner wanted to put certain things on record. As Deputy District Attorney Whitney Timm pointed out the google images are available to the public and an image used was a reference in literature and something Jane Doe said.
Mr. Leohner made constant and irrelevant interruptions during the People's opening statement. Judge Kaleb Cockrum had already given the standard instruction that attorneys' statements are not evidence. To pacify Mr. Leohner, he repeated that instruction to the jury. This was after Judge Cockrum denied Mr. Leohner's request to remove Google images of the Betty Chinn Shelter, another building where the molestation occurred (which I think was Arcata Partnership) and an image Jane Doe mentioned.
It took all my strength to sit through then Mr's Leohner's digusting opening statement which isn't even worth writing about because it offered nothing but Mr. Leohner's opinion with nothing to back his claims. He called the three young girls and their mothers liars and was dismissive about the sexual abuse. Mr. Leohner claimed that the screams by Jane Doe # 1 weren't unusual. This statement was attributed to Jane Doe's mom and referred to the time Brown put his fingers into Jane Doe #1 while the mother was in the other room. Mr. Leohner sneered at Jane Doe # wanting to be an attorney; "a defense attorney" and made fun of her watching Law and Order.
In his opening statement, Mr. Leohner said Jane Doe #2 told "the investigator it hurt." That Trinity County did not follow up with EPD. That his client left the Betty Chinn shelter "not because of molestation allegations" but because he broke the rules.

Maybe if we stop housing molestors at local shelters and apartments, young girls and boys wouldn't be their prey. There is a shortage of affordable housing with wait lists for years. People who have no place to stay and have lost the roof over their head due to no fault of their own are sinking while DHHS, Danco, other County providers as well as property management companies are housing molesters and pervs in local apartments, transitional housing and shelters. Some property management companies chose that easy money and keep the pervs while ousting law abiding tenants.
Throw out the rapists, molestors and sex offenders on the streets and use those apartments to house people who are not predators. That won't solve Humboldt's housing shortage but it will make a significant dent.
Jane Doe #1's mother should have believed and protected her daughter. The teacher should have taken action as a mandatory reporter. It took a little girl to tell her neighbor for the third time before she was believed. Had the police not been called, Brown would still be molesting 8 year olds.
Trinity County is a joke.
