The coverage of Zoellner's latest civil trial had errors , lack of context by the media who rushed a headline

Regarding his report , Det. Eric Losey admitted his error in open court during the 2017 trial.

"Regrettably, I wrote the name Zoellner." He admitted that was an error on his part and he had reviewed the audio file."

This is just one of the many posts on the 2017 Kyle Zoellner case.

Here are case numbers, go to PACER and read the documents for yourself.

Times-Standard, Red Headed Blackbelt, KRCR, Lost Coast Outpost all jumped the gun with  sensational headlines in the last couple of days about money being awarded without proper background context and with errors.  Eric Kirk pontificated on half baked coverage. He is a lawyer!

While RHBB said the decision about the award could be reversed, an anonymous commenter pointed out the The City of Arcata is no longer a defendant and provided a link.

This is what happens when people who don't understand law, cover courts, rush to print something without waiting for a final ruling and can't be bothered to be accurate, do research or provide facts about the involved parties. Did they watch the trial, the verdict? Just looking up the ruling would have avoided these errors.

Arcata Police Department did botch and mishandle the case. So did a lot of others present that night at the party, that house and witnesses who never came forward. Drunk, hostile people screaming at the police with race thrown in made it a volatile environment and Arcata allows Cal Poly dollars and the woke crowd to influence investigations and the judicial process.

Both the Lawson family and supporters as well as the Zoellners and their supporters have their bias and selective memory. Every time this case resurfaces, it opens wounds in the community.

Both and various unrelated parties have tried to make money off this tragedy and won't accept certain facts and conclusions.

The Humboldt County D. A. 's office prosecuted the case with what they had because the Lawson family, unrelated trolls from out of the area made a frenzy, a circus and certain local media enabled them. Instead of allowing this case to be properly investigated there was pressure to rush the preliminary hearing.

Zoellner is not the only defendant who is the recepient of sloppy work by certain members of local law enforcement. There have been other more egregious examples in Humboldt. The Humboldt County DA's office is not perfect but they should be allowed to do their job without political pressure and people using race to influence the judicial process.

Many lives have been destroyed in Humboldt and Humboldt Superior Court without ever getting justice or 1/1000 th of the support the Lawsons and Zoellners have received. You really think these local media who are still doing half baked coverage care about you beyond a headline? If they did, they wouldn't have done such a shitty job reporting on the criminal and civil trial.

CalPoly should put some of their greedy profit towards funding APD, not allowing drunk college students to do drugs and whatever else they want while they sit by silently while someone maligns an entire County as racist. CalPoly profits from students they bring here. They need to take responsibility for how they impact Arcata and the safety of their students. Most of the other local media stays silent about reporting crimes, rapes and other cases at Cal Poly. Can't piss of ad money? So spare me the faux concern about the Lawson case and that you care about racism or justice.

Humboldt has racists but not every single person deserves the hate and negativity whipped up in 2017 about the Lawson case and unnecessarily dragged out for years.

I was attacked for printing the facts about this trial in 2017 while everyone else ran with the Lawson narrative. The rest of the media was silent. Humboldt was silent. Not much has changed in 2022.
