HSU new data dashboard increases trans+ and non-binary visibility

In response to student requests and in order to increase trans+ and non-binary visibility at Humboldt State University, a new data dashboard will show the campus’ gender diversity.

The announcement comes during National Transgender Awareness Week, which begins Monday, Nov. 13 and culminates with Trans Day of Remembrance, Saturday, Nov. 20.

The data dashboard was developed in consultation with HSU’s Transgender, Gender Non-binary & Gender Non-conforming Task Force, which was formed in October 2020 to address issues important to transgender, nonbinary, and gender non-conforming people at the University.

“It is difficult to value that which remains invisible,” says Loren Cannon, Philosophy instructor. Toward the goal of increasing trans visibility and respect on campus, the dashboard is a keystone effort that allows students to self-identify their gender identity and gives University departments and leadership an ethical way to better understand trans+ representation.

“Data is often seen through the lens of bias and steeped in power and privilege,” says Michael Le, director of ITS Institutional Research, Analytics & Reporting. “This dashboard is a first step in dismantling the power and privilege of defining gender identity. The intent is to reveal that state definitions are more dynamic than federal definitions, yet more rigid than how individuals see themselves.”

The campus community is invited to learn more about the dashboard at a virtual unveiling on Tuesday, Nov. 16 at 1 p.m.

The Transgender, Gender Non-binary & Gender Non-conforming Task Force is offering trainings to staff, faculty, and student groups who wish to gain understanding and cultural competence in trans/GNB pratices of inclusion and respect. The task force is also seeking additional members. Contact chair Mira Friedman at mira@humboldt.edu for more information.
