I received this letter today from someone who identifies as "a person in Eureka." It was post marked May 19.
The EPD letter above is very specific. These are very specific and detailed allegations. I have sent it to EPD Chief Steve Watson. If he replies, I will publish that response separately. I have also sent it to the City of Eureka and asked them for a second time the status of the EPD texts investigation. The first follow up was in April.
Eureka City Manager Miles Slattery responded, "Unfortunately John, nothing new to report as of yet."
I have linked the posts I did on the "EPD text investigation." Go back and read them and the questions I raise, specifically the March 18 and March 22 posts. Read this letter again.
Remember the questions I asked in the EPD text posts early on? Some of those questions were what if someone wanted to get rid of Chief Watson?
I asked who profits if Sgt. Rodrigo Reyna-Sanchez and Officer Mark Meftah are no longer at Eureka Police Department? Who has eyes on being the next Eureka Police Chief?
I already asked once about one complaint and about a specific Sgt in a March post. This letter contains at least one incident about a male EPD Sgt and alleged conduct/sexual harassment that I am aware of from multiple sources now.
The incidents mentioned in the letter span the time period when EPD Chief Dave Douglas, Chief Murl Harpham, Chief Garr Nielsen, Chief Andy Mills and Chief Watson have been in charge. The letter makes them sound like these are only from Chief Watson's time. Both present Captains have been around for these incidents and worked in this department for years.
Knowing how I feel about EPD, the department with the best dispatchers and how I feel about most EPD officers who are decent, those that enable toxic culture and those that scapegoat officers and supervisors need to be exposed.
This culture isn't just at EPD but the "EPD texts" have started a domino effect. A new chief isn't going to fix the problem because the cancer of evil, good ole boys and filth permeates every level of Humboldt.
Instead of the evil being punished, Humboldt targets those trying to expose it. Those that protect it and have stayed silent are enablers and just as guilty.
People trust me do my job. They know I am fair and I can't be bought or intimidated. I have been in this community for a long time. I am very observant. There is a lot of information I know.
I receive many tips. I have only received three via the mail, all having to do with politicians or law enforcement. The people who sent these went to lengths to be extra anonymous.Trust works both ways.
The first mail tip was vague with a very obvious agenda and sent to me two months after an alleged incident with no date and no information tjat I could use to follow up. To that person, I am not going to chase down information, do your bidding and if you send a tip, include specifics and information. Also, don't try and goad me. I owe you nothing. I take risks every day. Why didn't you send that to other media?
The second tip was about a politician. This person did send some information but it was mostly opinion and I checked it. Things were not as claimed and inaccurate.
The third tip is the letter above.
Clearly, people reach out to me with information that they know no other local media will follow up on. People who send me tips trust me and they know I maintain their anonymity.
