So, is Deputy DA Bernthal employed by Humboldt or Fresno or Contra Costa County?

After watching Deputy District Attorney Luke Bernthal in the Jon Goldberg trial, I was curious about Deputy District Attorney Luke Bernthal's background.

Here is a link to his Cal Bar Registration.

Mr. Bernthal lists his affiliation with a Fresno Firm. It would be a safe assumption he no longer works there, unless he is moonlighting.

His e-mail address is with the Contra Costa County DA. He no longer works there unless he is teleporting back and forth  between Contra Costa County and Humboldt.

I thought when a lawyer gets a new job, they have to update their address and contact information. Mr. Bernthal has been with the Humboldt County D.A.'s office for almost two years. Is he sloppy or is it just one of those rules Mr. Bernthal thinks he doesn't need to follow, just like in the Goldberg case?

As pointed out in a comment on my post about his cross examination of Jon Goldberg, you can’t impeach a witness with something the lawyer said.

And that isn't the only mistake he's made. Is this the best that District Attorney Maggie Fleming has to offer to family members of homicide victims?

If I am being hard on Mr. Bernthal, tough.
He has been arrogant and disrespectful to Mr. Russo and witnesses.

A competent attorney can make a big difference in a homicide case. People are already hurting from one loss.

There are other attorneys at the Humboldt County District Attorney's office that would have done a better job.

There have been others in the legal field (not anyone from Humboldt) that have privately conveyed their opinions to me about the prosecution in this case. They have read other coverage on this case, not just mine. And they agree with my observations.

There is similar feedback from the public too. People who have served on juries. People who are potential jury members.

Prior to this case, Mr. Bernthal had no problem talking with me.

I didn't need tips or paling around with anyone during the Paul Gallegos administration. I don't need them now. The very criticism that was made of the Paul Gallegos administration by some Maggie Fleming supporters  applies to the Maggie Fleming administration. They have become what they criticized : Playing favorites, unchecked power of abuse, arrogance.

They overcharged this case instead of looking at the extenuating circumstances and charging it appropriately. Why didn't they make a plea deal instead of wasting so many resources on this jury trial.

Is the prosecution allowed to do anything to get a conviction in a very political case. Would this case get this much attention if it did not have a Fortuna Fire Department connection?

Very disappointing that because of my speaking the truth about Deputy DA Bernthal, there have been some Deputy DAs who prior to this week were fine with me and very friendly and now won't even respond to a hello.  I am not here to do PR for the DA or anyone. That is not reporting. Shows their lack of maturity and professionalism.

Most of the defense, no matter what I wrote about them, are always civil; even friendly.

This is the problem with a small town, and the plague in Humboldt.  People are not used to independent reporting; not used to abuse of power being challenged in every system and organization. Whether it is lawyers, business people, politicians or the community.

Reporting is not gimmicky sites with fluff and coddling people's need for attention or allowing anonymous, immature keyboard trolls to feel their bs matters.  Reporting is not allowing who you cover to dictate the news just because their feelings maybe hurt.

Insecure egos in Humboldt have stifled many talented people in Humboldt County. Most people just keep quiet because speaking up in this town has financial and social consequences.

When you have other local media sources (with the exception of a few individual reporters) catering to egos, not willing to take a stand for the People, truth and justice suffers.

Guess my honest reporting on the Kitchen and Goldberg case in these last two weeks was too much for certain Deputy DAs.  They had no problem with my coverage, prior to these last two weeks.

  1. Arrogant attorneys impose a Byzantine style to cover for their incompetence. He hasn't changed his information because he has resumes out all over the state?
