Because Coffee staff did the right thing but more than Old Town owners should be aware of an alleged scam

"A guy came into Because Coffee claiming he had made a to-go order a few days back and been given the wrong drinks and that a manager had said over the phone that we would refund the cash purchase. His story seemed pretty dubious for a number of reasons so I denied him, but it turns out he tried to pull the same scam at Oberon a couple weeks ago, and I've heard tell he tried it at the Henderson Center Old Town Coffee & Chocolates location."

"Could you warn our local food service people about him, please? He's blond, in his early-to-mid 20s, about 5' 7", stocky build with a roundish face...that's all I can recall but hopefully that's enough to help people recognize him if he tries it elsewhere. Also if anyone catches him in the act they might have a chance to take his photo and call EPD while he's kept "waiting for his refund."

"I did file a report, so he could hopefully be charged based on what he's done thus far -- and anyone who gave him refunds might want to add their complaint to EPD!"

"Thanks! the Because Coffee staff "

This email was sent out to Old Town business owners from Eureka Main Street. Kudos to Because Coffee for being a good caring neighbor and business.

If this guy has stopped by and pulled this at your business, you should call EPD too or the appropriate law enforcement agency in your town so there is more than one record.

Joe Filgas just informed me this happened at Cafe Nooner. This is the exact reason that I shared it on the blog.

With Prop 47, one location just means this guy preys on businesses unless there is a record.
