Judge Reinholtsen had to admonish Chad Smith in court for yelling at his attorney

Trial confirmation and bail reduction hearing was scheduled today for alleged child molestor Chad Smith.

What would a Smith hearing be without theatrics from the defendant?

Ms. Allbright told Judge Dale Reinholtsen that after speaking with her client and the People some issues had come up and she requested a continuance of the bail reduction hearing to give the People written notice.

Ms. Allbright said that Smith agreed to waive time and asked the jury trial of April 2 be vacated and rescheduled for the week of July 6.

Smith said nothing until then but as Judge Reinholtsen asked him if this was okay, Smith burst out, "I never agreed to a continuance." He started arguing with Ms. Allbright and Judge Reinholtsen had to admonish him in open court.

A Marsden motion is set for 2:30 p.m. and another hearing tomorrow morning at 8:30 a.m.  A Marsden motion is held in a closed courtroom.

This is Smith's third request for Marsden motion.

Deputy District Attorney Stacey Eads is prosecuting the case. Ms. Christina Allbright was appointed to represent Smith.

  1. What a Drama Queen. He must like the accommodations at the Humboldt County Jail. Where else could he live though? I’m pretty sure he’s burned all, or most of his bridges and would be surprised if anyone would take him in. Well, Mark Dare might I suppose. If he’s so broke that the county is paying for his private legal defense, it seems like it would be hard to rent something. Additionally, I’m not sure he would stick around here if he got a bail reduction. If he gets out and does stick around, how safe are his abuse victims and ex-wife? Part of his charges were due to violations. of a restraining order. What’s going to stop him from doing that again? Jail... that’s the only thing that will stop him. Nothing else. He doesn’t think the rules apply to him. So why even consider it? Let him sit in there and maybe he will be more motivated to go through the process and get on with things. Get this over and let his victims get on with their lives. If he so easily disrespects the courts, think of how awful he will treat his victims.
