"There were no indications from testings that Mr. Goldberg has any serious mental health problems, character defects or pathological problems."

Shortly before 11 a.m. this morning, the defense called Licensced Clinal and Forensic psychologist Dr. Andrew Renouf to the stand.

Dr. Renouf has testified as an expert for Humboldt County Superior Court and done many mental health evaluations.

He went into detail about his background including specific degrees from Stanford University, University of Denver and University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Renouf explained how he evaluated Jon Goldberg what tests he used, including the Montreal Cognitive Assessment administered to President Trump.

His evaluation included several tests and interviews. The assessment was done in May 2017. Dr. Renouf was retained by the defense.

Jon Goldberg provided Dr. Renouf with a narrative about his perspective of the events.

Key parts of his testimony:

There was potential for mild cognitive impairment as it relates to attention, memory, and impulse control but to make a conclusion, a more in depth assessment needed to be done.

He conducted tests which included propensity to anger.

"There were no indications from testings that Mr. Goldberg has any serious mental health problems, character defects or pathological problems."

"I did have some minor concerns about his substance abuse," said Dr. Renouf. "At times, he used alcohol excessively and may have used cannabis exclusively."

Dr. Renouf said particular traits desirable to Jon Goldberg were loyalty, fidelity and honesty.

Deputy Public Defender Casey Russo is still questioning Dr. Renouf. He will be back on the stand after lunch break. Deputy District Attorney Luke Bernthal cross examined Dr. Renouf but wanted to review a report during afternoon break.  It is 2:45 now and we are still on afternoon break.

I did not cover all of Dr. Renouf's testimony today as I was checking on some other cases.
Psychological opinions are not hard facts like testimony about an autopsy.  Even a layperson can understand the hurt, betrayal and other emotions in this case from life experience.

Nothing Dr. Renouf or anything the People present as a rebuttal report changes the fact that Goldberg shot Tim Smith. It can make the difference between murder and lesser charges but the jury is not going to make that decision based on any psychological report.

The  ballistics expert and Jon Goldberg are the only new perspectives left in this case.
