Ashlyn Reed to meet with Arcata Elementary School regarding her son

Just received the response below from Arcata Elementary a couple of minutes ago. I called and spoke with Ms. Reed. She also received communication from the school just now and has responded back agreeing to meet with them.

Arcata Elementary email response:

"Mr. Chiv,

My name is David Lonn and I am the Interim Superintendent for the Arcata School District.  You had asked Victoria Parker for comments regarding Ms. Reed's post.  This is what we can tell you.

The Arcata School District has seen Ms. Reed’s open letter alleging her son was bullied or abused at Arcata Elementary School, and that the parent learned about this in August 2017.  The allegations are disturbing.  In crafting this response, the District is mindful of the fact that matters contained in pupil records are confidential.  This limits what we can say about this matter, because the laws of the land understandably elevate pupil privacy over the public’s access to such information.  Suffice it to say that the parent’s allegation was brought to the District’s attention during summer recess in August 2017, and the student left the District before the start of the school year, as indicated by Ms. Reed’s open letter.  The District asked Ms. Reed for any additional information she wished to share, and she did not respond.  The District followed its policies for handling such allegations. We will engage with this parent to hear what she has to say with open hearts and minds. We hope for the best for Ms. Reed and her son and have reached out to her after this post came to our attention.  We want the public to know that our schools are safe.

This what we can share.  Thanks for your correspondence.

David Lonn
Interim Superintendent
Arcata School District"
