24 witnesses expected to testify in Jon Goldberg trial including psychiatrists, ballistic and cell phone expert

Two motions in limine were scheduled to be heard in the Jon Goldberg case on February 7; they were continued to be heard February 9.

One motion  is whether to admit an excited utterance by Rachel Goldberg and the other is psychiatric evidence. The excited utterance by Rachel Goldberg was referred to in the preliminary hearing.

There was no information whether they were heard or not but Courtroom Two was briefly open this afternoon for Visiting Judge Graham A. Cribbs to discuss scheduling with attorneys. After some mundane discussion about witnesses and timeline, Goldberg's attorney, Deputy Public Defender Casey Russo asked to approach. Deputy District Attorney Luke Bernthal and Deputy District Attorney Trent Timm (second chair on this case) spoke with Judge Cribbs, they went into Chambers and then shortly after, the Courtroom was closed.

After meeting with the Judge for about 45 minutes privately, the attorneys left.

While the courtroom was open, this is the information that was discussed; could have changed when they met in private.

Judge Cribbs said, "I think we are going to be involved in jury selection for a period of time." Why is explained below.

The trial started on February 8 instead of February 5, because another case of Mr. Russo's  had priority.

So far, after potential jurors being excused for hardship, 49 jurors have filled out the long questionnaire and are ready to be individually questioned. More jurors will  fill out questionnaires and then be individually questioned. The Judge and attorneys will be receiving more questionaires over the weekend or Monday.

Individual jurors is expected to start next Tuesday or Wednesday.

Mr. Russo has a pre paid work conference so for half day on February 15 and all day February 16, the trial will be "dark" which means not in session. However, by next Thursday, attorneys said they hope to know when "general jury selection" should start.

Mr. Bernthal said he thinks jury selection should be completed by February 23. A, six week estimate had been given to the jury with the trial starting February 5 and ending by March 16. Evidence is expected to take two weeks with full days. The attorneys suggested extending the deadline to March 23 because of all the reasons above.

There are approximately 24 witnesses which include a defense psychiatrist, Dr. Renouf; a rebuttal psychiatrist for the prosecution; a defense ballistics expert and a defense cell phone expert, Mr. Holland.
