CALFire reminder that burn permits are still suspended despite forecast for rain

I just spoke with CAL Fire Battalion Chief Jeremy Ward who clarified this reminder applies to "state responsibility areas."

CALFire Press Release:

The CAL FIRE Humboldt – Del Norte Unit would like to remind the public, that even with forecasted rain, burning is still currently suspended.  Each year, residents attempt to burn prior to upcoming rain.  Increasing winds often precede the rain, and each year these winds lead to vegetation fires from illegally burning debris piles.   These fires are preventable.  Taking the time to cover piles now allows the piles to be burnt safely at a later date when the burn suspension has been lifted.  Not only does this minimize the threat of wildfire, it reduces the risk of criminal or civil penalties.

While residential debris burning is still suspended, other prescribed fires are allowed to occur.  The prescribed fires are allowed under permit and upon meeting other requirements such as weather parameters and sufficient firefighting resources on site.  Today, CAL FIRE is assisting California State Parks with a prescribed burn at Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park.  These specially permitted projects are essential for habitat maintenance, fuels reduction, and other benefits.

Also of note, the north coast is again experiencing heavy drift smoke.  CAL FIRE would also like to remind the public not to call 9-1-1 to report smoke unless a distinct smoke column or flames are visible.   The Humboldt – Del Norte Unit does not have any active wildfires burning in its jurisdiction.  Please visit https://inciweb.nwcg.gov/ for fire information and links to the appropriate fire information phone numbers.  More information on smoke conditions can be found at:  https://www.ncuaqmd.org/wildfire-smoke-aqi-forecasts-maps
