I reported on voluntary manslaughter suspect Russell Holt in 2015. He was arrested by Arcata Police Department for burglary, false imprisonment of an elder, resisting/ obstructing or delaying the duties of an officer and trespassing. On February 2022, APD arrested him for murder.
The DA charged him with voluntary manslaughter, assault like to produce great bodily injury and three special allegations. The Public Defender's office is representing Holt. Holt had his preliminary hearing in March 23. He is in custody and as of 7/14 spent 527 days in jail. Bail of $500,000 has not been posted. Trial confirmation is on 9/6; jury trial is on 9/18.
There seems to be a discrepancy and it seems the preliminary hearing minutes are incorrect. E court matches the charges in information filed after the preliminary hearing.
Charges for jury trial:
9/6: Trial confirmation continued to Sept 13 by defense.
9/13: Another continuance by defense which was granted. 9/18 date vacated. Trial confirmation rescheculed for 1/24; jury trial 2/5.
1/24/24: Motion to continue by DA denied by Judge Kaleb Cockrum. Good cause not found. No court reporter; attorneys object to recording of hearing. Trial assignment is 2/2.
2/2: At trial assignment, jury trial continued due to courtroom unavailability. 2/5 date vacated. Trial confirmation on 2/27; jury trial on 3/11.
2/27: Trial confirmation continued by DA to 3/4. Motion to file amended information granted.
3/4: Jury trial confirmed; 10 day time estimate. Trial assignment on 3/8.
3/8: No courtroom available. 3/11 date vacated. Trial assignment on 3/15. Jury trial on 3/18.
