EPD Chief Steve Watson authorizes black mourning bands across the badge in memory of James Armstrong

It is with great sadness I share that retired EPD Sergeant James “Jim” Armstrong passed away unexpectedly last night (Monday, November 5, 2018) at his home in Eureka.

Jim was known and loved by many and he served his community as a member of the Eureka Police Department from November 1981 until his "retirement" on May 5, 2011 (29 ½ years).  Per the direction of the City Manager and Mayor, flags will remain at half-staff thru the end of today and we will again lower the flags to half-staff on the day of Jim’s memorial.  Black mourning bands across the uniform badge are authorized until midnight on the day of his funeral (to be announced later).  Jim is depicted in the bottom right of the attached photo.

The following information may be of interested for those who knew and worked with Jim during his long and honorable career with EPD:

• Became a Reserve Officer - 11/23/81
• Temporary Dispatcher/Clerk - 6/15/82
• Reserve - 12/13/82
• Police Recruit - 4/16/83
• Police Officer - 08/15/83
• Police Investigator -08/10/92

• Sergeant - 11/22/2000
• Retired - May 5, 2011
• Temp Police Officer (evidence work) - 5/5/11 – 6/3015

Jim was also working for the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office as a part-time extra help deputy at the time of his passing.  Among his many hobbies were photography, travel (he recently returned from a vacation to Paris), the San Francisco Giants, and amateur ham radio (Jim was a past president of the Humboldt Amateur Radio Club).
