Humboldt Bay Fire used the Jaws of Life in Sixth and I traffic collision

On 11/25/18, at 3:08 P.M. a fire truck from Humboldt Bay Fire was dispatched to a reported injury traffic collision at the intersection of Sixth and I Streets.



As they responded, Humboldt Bay Fire dispatchers received additional information that an occupant in one of the vehicles was unable to get out. The dispatcher upgraded the response to a full extrication assignment consisting of the initial fire truck, three additional fire engines and a chief officer.


Upon arrival Humboldt Bay Fire units found the intersection blocked with one vehicle with major damage and one person still inside. The second vehicle had moderate damage and was against a building on the northeast corner of the intersection. The occupants of that vehicle had self-extricated.

Firefighters used the “Jaws of Life” to free a door of the vehicle in the intersection. This allowed firefighters and City Ambulance personnel to access and remove the patient in the vehicle. The patient had minor to moderate injuries. The patient was transported by City Ambulance for treatment. The occupants of the other vehicle had minor injuries but declined treatment.

Humboldt Bay Fire wants to urge everyone to slow down and follow directions from law enforcement and fire personnel at accident scenes. Emergency personnel may give directions several blocks from a scene to minimize disruption to traffic flows and to keep the responders working at the scene safe.
