Supreme Court rules religious employers are exempt from employment discrimination claims and providing free contraceptive coverage

In a 7-2 ruling, the Supreme Court ruled today that religious schools are exempt from employment discrimination claims.

This ruling involved cases of Catholic schools in California and the teachers they fired.

The Supreme Court ourt recognized a past ministerial exception saying that under the First Amendment the government could not interfere with a church's employment decisions.

In another 7-2 ruling,  the Supreme Court said employers with sincere moral or religious objections to deny employees access to free contraceptive coverage.

In both rulings, Justices Sonia Sotomayor and Ruth Bader Ginsburg dissented.
