Protective order served on convicted child abuser Christopher Best

Convicted child abuser Christopher Best had already been sentenced on July 16 to 18 years in prison.

On July 22, there was a clarification of sentencing. Judge Timothy Canning put the case on calendar.

There was no change to Best's sentence of 18 years but Judge Canning wanted to clarify that the maximum term was 16 years, not 12 years as he mentioned in sentencing Best for Count 1.

Deputy District Attorney Carolyn Schaffer pointed out that prior to the plea, Best was facing a life sentence. As a part of the plea, charges against Best were dismissed.

Even though it was written in the plea form, Judge Canning took a waiver of his right to appeal from Best today in court.

Best was also served with a protective order, at the request of the victims. Since the protective order is effective from today for 10 year, Best's attorney, Ms. Andrea Sullivan had Judge Canning advise Best there could be another protective order upon his release from prison.

There was no PPRF report. Ms. Sullivan said that in other counties, a PPRF report is filled out by probation. In Humboldt, attorneys do that so Ms. Sullivan will call Probation and she will have that report completed by the next court hearing.

Receipt of PPRF report is scheduled for August 6. This is merely a formality. I will not be adding any update from that hearing.
