Criminal proceedings were suspended before Wesley Starritt could be charged with murder and attempted murder

Criminal proceedings were suspended against Wesley Starritt on June 2 after Deputy Public Defender Jessica Bennett declared doubt. Starritt will be evaluated by Dr. Wilson. Starritt has already been through the PC 1368 process for a prior case and was deemed incompetent to stand trial. Then he was sent back from the State Hospital, certified competent and that case was resolved.

When doubt had been declared, Starritt had not yet been charged by the DA with Clark's murder or the attempted murder of the female in Cooper Gulch.

I reported on Starrit's arrest for assault in 2018 and followed that case to conclusion. While he was at the state hospital, there was an incident. I have covered Starritt's arrests since his release. You can access all posts on Starritt, including my recent coverage via the search feature on the blog.

Chief Watson has not discussed with District Attorney Maggie Fleming yet how this will impact arraigning Starritt for murder. I have contacted her with that question.

DA Fleming responded, "The law provides that if a person is unable to understand the nature of the criminal proceedings or to assist counsel in the case, the proceedings are suspended.

Given the court has declared a doubt about competency in one of his cases, I anticipate that the court will declare a doubt for all his cases-including any new case at arraignment."

"As he was arrested yesterday he must be arraigned tomorrow afternoon."
