Defense still wants Joshua Cooley placed in Humboldt

Placement hearing for sexually violent predator Joshua Cooley was scheduled this morning. It was continued to July 17.

Only Judge John Feeney and court staff were in the Courtroom. Everyone else was on Zoom.

Ms. Meagan O'Connell is Cooley's attorney. Deputy Conflict Counsel April Van Dyke appeared for Ms. O'Connell today.

Deputy District Attorney Stacey Eads appeared for the People. Deputy County Counsel Heather Cooper appeared for the County and she requested the continuance.

In addition to Liberty Healthcare's Regional Coordinator Rafael Loya, Dr. Cameron Zeidler and Rob Cureton, clinical director for Liberty Healthcare were present for today's hearing.

Judge John Feeney had denied a request by Liberty Healthcare and defense at the last hearing for a County agency to assist in search to secure housing for Cooley.

The defense has filed a motion that the County designate an agency to secure housing in Humboldt.

The People have filed a memorandum in response.

Ms. Cooper asked that the DA provide her with "a copy of the letter brief referenced in Ms. O'Connell's motion."

Dr. Zeidler asked the Court to state "extraordinary circumstances exist" to find housing for Cooley outside Humboldt and to authorize Liberty Healthcare to notify other counties to search for potential placements. The counties are Los Angeles, Sacramento and San Francisco.

Judge Feeney asked Ms. Van Dyke for her input on this request. "Unfortunately, I am unfamiliar with this case and merely standing in for Ms. O'Connell for this continuance. I am not comfortable stating our position."

Since the last hearing, the Court received correspondence from Liberty HealthCare on May 22 and June 12.
