"I have spoken with co-counsel and Ms. Schaffer to continue sentencing to July 16 to allow him to be personally present"

Sentencing was scheduled this morning for Humboldt Hill child abuse suspects Christopher Best and Gaylia Wilson. It was continued to July 16 so defendants could be personally present.

There was a probation report for Best but there was no report for Wilson. Since all parties agreed to the continuance, Judge Timothy Canning granted Ms. Sullivan's request.

Deputy District Attorney Carolyn Schaffer appeared via Zoom. Best's attorney, Ms. Andrea Sullivan and Wilson's attorney Mr. Joe Judge were in court.

Wilson is out of custody on a Cruz waiver. Mr. Judge filed a 977 waiver of personal appearance today and Wilson was not present today.

"I have spoken with co-counsel and Ms. Schaffer to continue sentencing to July 16 to allow him to be personally present," said Ms. Sullivan.

Ms. Sullivan said the victims want to read victim impact statements either via Zoom or be present in court.

Ms. Schaffer said, "the kids are anxious to see a conclusion." She agreed to the continuance as long as both defendants were sentenced together and asked Wilson be ordered to appear for sentencing.

Ms. Schaffer is filing a report which is the interview Best agreed to as a part of his plea deal and that will supplement the factual basis of the plea.

In April both resolved their cases with pleas. Best got a 18 year prison sentence. Wilson three years of probation.

Best pleaded guilty to two counts of PC 288.5 (a). He will serve 12 years for Count 1 and six years consecutively for Count 2. The rest of the counts were dismissed with a Harvey  reservation.

Wilson pleaded guilty to Count 3, PC 273 (a). The prison term for that is 6 years in prison but that is only if she violates probation. Wilson's attorney, Mr. Joe Judge said the agreement was for three years of probation and she could get "upto a year in jail."

Both cannot possess firearms or ammunition for life. More details in previous post link below.
