Why should Markis Shirley follow the law when despite multiple arrests, he keeps getting plea deals?

Markis Shirley had a change of plea scheduled in his DUI case on January 24. He bailed out of custody on January 10 and then got arrested on January 17.

Today, he was laughing in court with his attorney, Deputy Public Defender Luke Brownfield. When the case was called, it was obvious why.

Mr. Brownfield requested the preliminary hearing for his DUI case be vacated and he told Judge Lawrence Killoran, "I think this is going to resolve." He asked the change of plea be continued to make sure the DI
istrict Attorney is not filing any new charges. That date is February 14.

Shirley cannot bail out due to the "parole hold" on the most recent arrest. He also has a no bail hold for a 2015 auto theft case out of Yuba County.

Deputy District Attorney Joel Buckingham was present in court for the People.

As noted in more than one previous post, he has had multiple arrests. He pleaded guilty in a 2015 case. The original charge was rape,; Shirley entered a plea to lesser charges.
