Arraignment of juvenile charged in Oceanview hearing open to public, he may be tried as an adult

After Deputy District Attorney Stacey Eads, Ms. Christina Allbright, a CWS representative and probation representative met privately with Visiting  Judge Doris Shockley, immediate family members of the victim were let inside the courtroom. A few minutes after that, media and other members of the public were allowed into the courtroom.

Ms. Christina Allbright had accepted appointment as attorney for the minor.  Charges and any plea the minor may entered was addressed prior to the courtroom being opened to the media and the rest of the public. That information was not a part of the proceedings open to the public. Deputy District Attorney Stacey Eads said that the minor Craft was charged with one count of murder; special allegation for that count was using a knife during the commission of the crime.

Bail for "Mr. Craft" aka "Mr. Sterling" was set at $1 million in the warrant. The juvenile was dressed in blue jeans, a checkered shirt, has a beard but he was handcuffed like any other defendant . His last name was stated in court today by Judge Shockley. She said that is how he is charged in the complaint.

Judge Shockley explained to the public some issues needed to be addressed, including a motion to transfer meaning the Court will decide whether he will be tried as an adult.

Future dates were set for that motion and a 241 report.

Here is a link to what Welfare Institutions and Code 241 refers to:

The defendant's aunt told the court bailiff (outside in the hallway) that Craft's mom was in custody, the aunt said there was no father (without clarifying what that exactly meant.) The aunt said she was the only one here today as far as the defendant's family.

In court, it was just mentioned the defendant had a family member in custody.

Two pre trial dates are set for Oct 4 and October 18. The minor will be housed in juvenile hall. The Court ordered the defendant cannot reside with his mother because it is contrary to his welfare.

Judge Shockley also said that the "minor" violated a court order and he was "likely to flee jurisdiction."
