The suspect, Jonathan Hoppner, 25 years of age, had multiple sexual battery convictions in Sonoma County, and was paroled to Mendocino County in March of 2017. As a condition of Hoppner's supervised release, he is restricted from having access to social media sites that are frequently used by minors.
In a search of Hoppner's residence Detectives located evidence that Hoppner had been accessing and engaging persons on social media sites, placing him in violation of the terms of his parole. The ages of the persons he interacted with are unknown. At the time of the search, Hoppner was not at home. Detectives returned to the residence about 4:05 PM and took Hoppner into custody for being in violation the terms of his parole. He was transported and booked into the Mendocino County Jail for a parole violation and is being held on a "no bail" status.
Sonoma County DA (2017) press release:
Santa Rosa, CA – March 9, 2017 – Defendant Jonathan Michael Hoppner, 24 years old, of Santa Rosa, was sentenced today by the Honorable Robert M. LaForge to two years in state prison. Hoppner was convicted of two counts of felony false imprisonment, committed shortly after being released on parole for a conviction of false imprisonment and sexual battery. At the time of the offenses Hoppner was being housed at a Santa Rosa motel with 24-hour-a-day assistance from employees of Supportive Living Assistance, under the supervision of State Parole. The victims were two employees of that company. Hoppner is a registered sex offender with seven prior convictions for sexual battery stemming back to January, 2013.
District Attorney Ravitch stated “This predatory behavior can be prevented only through incarceration. It is unfortunate that options for this individual are limited, but public safety is essential.”
The current charges were the result of an incident on April 27, 2016 when Hoppner hit and restrained both men. Hoppner was being housed at the Santa Rosa Avenue motel after press releases from Petaluma and Rohnert Park officials had warned residents in those cities that Parole intended to house him there, and that he was a high risk sex offender. Hoppner has developmental disabilities, but is legally competent to stand trial. In each of his prior sexual battery cases Hoppner approached and groped women in public places. The victims ranged from 15 to over 50 years old. He committed the current offense only weeks after being released on Parole.
The case was prosecuted by Deputy District Attorneys Matthew Henning and Robert Maddock, assisted by District Attorney Investigator Mark Azzouni. Officer Robert Moore of Santa Rosa Police Department headed the investigation.
According to this Press Democrat article, he assaulted two parole case workers.
