Those who profit from funding are not going to do anything about a homeless solution

This guy was screaming and wandering since 7 a.m, peeing and leaving trash around the offices and parking lot in the area. He left, I thought around 9 a.m.

Went out again at noon to see him passed out/face down in the bushes. Not wanting to assume he was passed out, I called EPD. For  three hours, people walking by on Second Street, including one landlord who owns several residences in the area, just ignored this guy. After all, why bother to check on just another transient?

After I called the EPD non emergency number, this guy woke up and staggered past me, completely oblivious to his surroundings. I called EPD back right away.

Those that enable the drunks and the drug addicts that are out on the streets, because they dont like structure, need to quit making excuses. Turned out, the guy passed out was another regular drunk/high guy I see around town.

Others  have increased the number of people wandering on the streets. The number one culprits are greedy landlords and the City of Eureka. It started with Palco Marsh and worsened when the City closed down the Budget Motel and properties owned by the Squires. One time payment is not a solution to housing when working people are a paycheck away from being homeless. Affordable housing and California is an oxymoron.

The Budget Motel and issues with the Squires went on for years. Spare us the "we care" routine.

So glad that the City got grant money and Mercer Fraser got yet another contract.

How many new private sector jobs were created? How did the taxpayers benefit from the Palco Marsh eviction? Think Floyd Squires is the only slumlord in Eureka?

Mold, mildew, and host of other issues are prevalent in local rentals. Fresh paint doesn't cover these health hazards.

Few landlords charge reasonable rent. Many landlords overlook drug use. Many local landlords collect SSI or charge outrageous rents and people deal with it because where else are you going to go? Locally owned apparently does not apply to a few property management monopolies and landlords with several properties.

The politicians are not going to do anything. The same people who ran in 2010 promising jobs and housing don't want to upset the golden goose of government funding that passes for economic growth in Humboldt.

The only person who has brought meaningful change in his district for regular citizens is Fifth District Supervisor Ryan Sundberg.

Those that anonymously or otherwise criticize Supervisor Sundberg are obvious with their agenda.

The City of Eureka PR spin machine, the County PR spin machine and city funded organizations like Eureka Main Street want to downplay the closing of businesses and the homeless problem. Why does the City of Eureka and the County of Humboldt need to fund organizations to"market"  businesses instead of the private sector? Private citizens would do a better job and earn the job, not have it handed to them to be a paid government apologist.

If citizens want change, then write to the state that hands out funding.  Or keep venting on Facebook and live with the status quo.

Maybe state politicians will give a damn if they are publicly embarassed; though I doubt it. Maybe they will hold another town hall meeting and listen and set up a committee for a report.

Local politicians and businesses know how to get media coverage that is favorable and free PR. And they can get away with it because they control advertising revenue in a small town. If you support these underhanded tactics with your money and your support; don't complain about problems, lack of service or lack of accountability.

Public shaming has not worked. Up here behind the Redwood curtain it's been business as usual for decades. Doesn't matter what business or if cannabis is legalized; the profit remains in the hands of a few.

There is no difference between the right and left in this town. There are few good people in Humboldt regardless of political views.

  1. I have done some internet related work for Ryan's 2018 campaign. Ryan has always had my personal support and since 2010. He is not my Supervisor and I cannot vote for him. I included this because in a small town, there are many others not so upfront.
