**W Street has been opened**

EPD is on scene on the 3400 block of W Street, assisting the HCSO with an assault investigation stemming from an incident in Cutten. W Street is currently closed between Glatt and Russell streets. Please avoid the area and use an alternate route.

9/15/26: At 6:48 p.m. convicted felon Taren Joseph Ray Aubrey was arrested by HCSO for PC459/461(a) burglary, PC 29800(a)(1) felon in possession of a firearm, PC 602.5(b) aggravated trespass and PC 3000.08(c) parole supervision. He was arrested and booked by HCSO Deputy J. Hunter. I have reached out to HCSO Lt. Jesse Taylor and HCSO PIO Erin Inskip to check if this is the suspect in the Cutten incident. I was correct. PIO Inskip responded a press release is being issued shortly. It was at 8:59 a.m. and I have added it to the post.

HCSO Press Release:

On September 14, 2026, at approximately 4:34 p.m., the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office Emergency Communications Center received a 9-1-1 call from a resident in the 3900 block of Walnut Street in Eureka reporting that he had shot a male subject who had forcibly entered his residence. The resident reported the suspect fled the area on foot toward Walnut Drive.

Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the scene, along with officers from the Eureka Police Department. A male subject matching the description of the suspect was located in the area of W Street and Glatt Street suffering from a gunshot wound.

Emergency medical personnel who were already staged in the area responded and transported the suspect to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

The suspect was identified as 30-year-old Taren Joseph Ray Aubrey of Eureka.

Based on evidence recovered at the scene, along with statements provided by the victim and witnesses, deputies determined that Aubrey had forcibly entered the residence prior to being shot.

Upon being released from the hospital, Aubrey was transported to the Humboldt County Correctional Facility and booked on the following charges:

• PC 459 – Burglary
• PC 29800(a)(1) – Felon/Addict in Possession of a Firearm
• PC 602.5(b) – Unauthorized Entry of an Occupied Dwelling
• PC 3000.08 – Violation of Parole

The victim was not injured during the incident. Based on the evidence gathered during the investigation, deputies determined the victim acted out of fear for their life when Aubrey was shot. The victim was not arrested in connection with the shooting.

The case has been forwarded to the Humboldt County District Attorney’s Office for review. No further information is available at this time.
