"The Eureka Police Department is implementing a visibility and safety strategy known as Rear Amber Deterrence to help improve roadway safety for motorists, pedestrians, bicyclists, and officers while also deterring crime. As part of this effort, patrol vehicles may activate rear amber lights while driving or when stopped.
These amber lights are used to increase visibility, alert drivers, pedestrians, bicyclist, and community members to law enforcement presence in the area. Officers will use this strategy when appropriate and when it does not compromise safety or enforcement objectives. The goals of Rear Amber Deterrence include: • Increasing officer visibility • Deterring unsafe driving behaviors • Reinforcing a consistent and proactive police presence Community members may notice patrol vehicles with rear amber lights activated during routine patrols throughout the city, while monitoring traffic, or during proactive enforcement activities. Together, we will continue striving for a safer Eureka. " EPD Commander Leonard LaFrance.
